Nyhavn Harbour and the surrounding buildings were originally alehouses and places of pleasure. It is still a place of vibrate colour and activity except now it is packed with tourist and locals alike, a great place to watch life pass by.

Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Princess and the Pea while living in number 20 along with many more of his famous fairy tales. In all he spent over 25 years of his life living in this area. The evocative nature of the place and the tales told by sailors and the like in the alehouses must have stimulated him to create his famous stories.
