Orkney contains some of the oldest and best-preserved Neolithic sites in Europe. The "Heart of Neolithic Orkney" is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sitting tight to the coastline of Eynhallow Sound on Mainland (the main island of Orkney) is an Iron Age village, the Broch of Gurness. The best preserved of all broch villages it was inhabited from the Iron Age through to Pictish times.
Orkney (in old Norse Orkneyjar) is a set of islands off the far north east cost of Scotland. Sitting on the 59th parallel, putting it level with Jæren in Norway and Alaska in the US. It has been my home since 2023. For a large part of its past history it was Norwegian.
