Distinctive black beaches of the west cost of New Zealand are nowhere more attractive than in Kaikōura, named as one of the most beautiful small towns in the world in 2023. The iron-rich sand and large rounded pebbles come from its volcanic history. The latest earthquake was less than a year after this image was taken in 2015 where the whole area was lifted by up to 2 meters.
