Lillooet Train/ Bus Ride

After traveling along the Sea to Sky Highway and Duffy Lake Road to Lillooet we camped the night in the BC Hydro campsite by Seton Lake, Lillooet. The reason was so we could be up early to catch the School Kids Train/ Bus on its return trip to Seton and back. This vehicle is the main transport for the small hamlet of Seton and some other First Nations domains along the lake. There is no road around the lake only a 75 mile gravel track up through the mountains.

Percy, a resident of Seton, drives the train every day for two weeks then has two weeks off. The other driver travels from Saskatchewan in his RV and camps in Lillooet before travelling back home for his time off every 2 weeks. Percy had retired from the Canadian railway but as the local line had no one to drive the community train he put his hand up to help the community and has been driving it ever since and is coming up for 48 years of service this autumn.

It’s an amazing contraption – a traditional school bus that has been converted to have train wheels as well as road tyres that can be lowered and raised up to drive on train tracks as well as drive on the road. But what’s more amazing is the route the train/ bus takes, not more than 10 feet from the edge of the lake for most of the journey. Take a look at the Timelapse video of the trip to see what over a hours train ride looks like in just 100 seconds. Enjoy!
